Barley Nimmo

The Tuscan port city of Livorno was my destination. It played host to an equally fascinating and ferociously passionate event. An event which due to the Covid-19 pandemic hadn’t taken place since 2019.

The Coppa Barontini is a nautical race which commences the summer months for all Livorno residents. The competition sees rowing teams from all districts of the city race through the its canals in a series of time trials. The race isn’t solely about athletic excellence but more about bringing civic pride to your respective neighbourhood.

Over the course of several months I documented the teams training leading up to its the climax, the final race, on a balmy evening in late June.
